About

Kunsthalle Lissabon was founded by Luís Silva and João Mourão in 2009 to explore and reimagine institutional models. Since its inception, KL has been dedicated to shaping contemporary art through innovative artistic and curatorial practices, working in multidisciplinary, collaborative and transparent ways. The institution seeks to create a space for experimentation and encounter, fostering different forms of production, circulation and engagement with contemporary art.

One of Kunsthalle Lissabon’s priorities is to actively contribute to greater equity in artistic representation by promoting the visibility of women, non-binary, trans and racialised artists, both locally and internationally. This commitment informs the institution’s programme and is reflected in an ongoing attention to the diversity of artists, practices and perspectives presented through its activities.

KL also works to reduce economic and social barriers to access to contemporary art. All exhibitions and activities are free of charge, with the aim of broadening and diversifying its audiences. Alongside its exhibition programme, the institution develops a mediation programme that includes guided visits and a dedicated programme for children, with workshops and activities developed in dialogue with each exhibition.

In recent years, this commitment has resulted in a programme predominantly centred on women artists and practices that question normative structures of gender, identity and representation. Through exhibitions, education, mediation and the creation of spaces for encounter, Kunsthalle Lissabon seeks to contribute to a more plural and accessible art field while continuing to explore institutional models and forms of practice that are socially engaged.
