Pedro Neves Marques: Morrer na América

Kunstalle Lissabon and the Arranha Céus Editora have the honor to present “Morrer na América”, a collection of short stories written by Pedro Neves Marques between 2013 and 2016.

"I arrived in the US on the week that New York City was struck by hurricane Sandy. The rain lashed against the façade of the United Nations and froze with the cold, like a second skin on the glass.

On the streets, social movements were losing momentum; activists in debt and without healthcare. In the inner states, the libertarian movement was claiming insurrection, with guns printed in transgenic plastic, while environmentalists were being criminalized and hunted down.

Beyond the corn and soy fields, further south, near the Mexican Gulf, a sea of oil exhibited the mutation of the species, including the human."

The book compiles five short stories – O Limite das Boas Intenções, Liberator, A Militarização dos Pobres, O Urso e Deepstaria e o Drone – most of them unpublished to date and brought together to, in the words of the author, “think technology and poverty in an artificial landscape.”

Pedro Neves Marques is an artist and writer. They are the editor of the anthology “The Forest and the School: Where to Sit at the Dinner Table?” (Archive Books, 2015), an anthology written in English and dedicated to Brazilian Anthropology. In 2012 they published the first book of short stories, entitled “O Processo de Integração” by Atlas Projects Editors. They are currently writing for several magazines and international catalogues about art and anthropology, including the e-flux Journal, BAK/MIT Press, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, SESC, Sursock Art Museum. Recently they had the premier of their film “Semente Exterminadora” at Indie Lisboa Festival de Cinema and had their first solo exhibition, Aprender a Viver com o Inimigo, at Museu Coleção Berardo, Lisbon. They were born in Lisbon and currently lives in New York.
